Sizing Guide

Choose the right size, first time.

1. Measure your gate opening

  1. 1Measure the gap between your gate posts at the top, middle and bottom — use the smallest measurement.
  2. 2Always measure post-to-post, not the brickwork beyond.
  3. 3Subtract 10mm from the measurement to allow for hinges and a smooth swing.
  4. 4Choose the next size DOWN from your final figure (e.g. 970mm → order 90cm).

2. Size comparison table

Gate WidthWidthTypical Use
60cm60cm (≈ 2ft)Narrow side passages, paths
75cm75cm (≈ 2'6")Single pedestrian access
83cm83cm (≈ 2'9")Most common UK side gate
90cm90cm (≈ 3ft)Wider pedestrian gate
99cm99cm (≈ 3'3")Bin / mower access
105cm105cm (≈ 3'6")Wide pedestrian + small wheeled access
120cm120cm (≈ 4ft)Wide single gate, max comfortable swing

3. Which size do I need?

My gap is 910mm — which gate?
Order the 90cm gate. This leaves a small allowance for the hinges and latch hardware.
My gap is 1000mm — which gate?
Order the 99cm gate. The 5–10mm allowance is ideal for hinges and a smooth swing.
My gap is 1100mm — which gate?
Order the 105cm gate to leave room for hardware on each side.
My gap is between sizes — what do I do?
Always size DOWN to the next available width. The remaining gap is taken up by hinges, latch and a small swing clearance.

4. Post spacing recommendations

We recommend 100×100mm (4×4") timber posts set in concrete a minimum of 600mm deep. The ideal post spacing equals your gate width plus 10mm of clearance for hinges and latch travel.

  • 60cm gate → 610mm post spacing
  • 83cm gate → 840mm post spacing
  • 99cm gate → 1000mm post spacing
  • 120cm gate → 1210mm post spacing

5. Hinge side vs latch side

Stand outside your property looking in at the closed gate. The side the gate pivots from is the hinge side. The side with the handle and latch is the latch side. Our gates are supplied un-hung so you can fit them either way.
